Galata Maritime Museum and Genoa’s Old Port: Is It Worth It?

Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

The Nazario Sauro submarine moored beside the Galata Maritime Museum

The Galata Maritime Museum is worth a half-day if Genoa’s relationship with the sea interests you; it is too substantial to use merely as filler beside the aquarium. As a rule of thumb we allow about two hours for Galata and another 20 minutes for the Nazario Sauro submarine; this is our own estimate, as the provider description gives no duration.

What you see

The museum presents maritime history across 31 rooms and five floors, moving from galleys and sailing ships to steam travel, migration and modern seafaring. Full-scale reconstructions and the harbour setting make it more physical than a sequence of display cases. The visit ends with a viewpoint over the port and old city when that area is open.

The Galata Maritime Museum and Nazario Sauro submarine pass costs €19 and has 4.4 stars from 101 reviews. The submarine is a separate, confined experience rather than just another museum room. Check access requirements on the booking page if narrow passages, ladders or reduced mobility are concerns.

The honest drawback

Galata rewards reading and slow exploration. Visitors who have already spent several hours at the aquarium may find a second large sea-themed attraction tiring, even though the subjects differ. Families should also decide whether the submarine’s confined interior suits everyone before treating it as essential.

Pairing it with the Old Port

The museum stands at the Darsena, within an easy walk of Porto Antico. After the visit, continue along the waterfront rather than trying to fit another major museum into the same afternoon. The harbour walk, viewpoints and a meal make a better contrast.

The combined aquarium, Galata and submarine ticket has 4.6 stars from 263 reviews, but no current starting price is shown in the local figures. Check the booking page and opening arrangements before deciding whether the bundle saves money and, more importantly, whether you have enough time.

Our recommendation

For most visitors interested in history, choose the €19 Galata-and-submarine pass and keep the rest of the half-day for the Old Port. Put the aquarium on a different day. If your time is limited and marine history is not a priority, walk the harbour without buying a museum ticket.
