Camogli and San Fruttuoso from Genoa: A Practical Day Trip

Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

The stone abbey of San Fruttuoso beside a clear cove and wooded slopes

Use the train for Genoa to Camogli, then treat San Fruttuoso as the weather-dependent part of the day. The abbey sits in a cove without road access, so you continue by boat or on foot. That makes the outing memorable, but it also means the sea and trail conditions control the plan.

Start with Camogli

Camogli is more than a connection. Leave time for the tall painted façades, waterfront and lanes behind the promenade before boarding a boat. Check live rail times for Camogli-San Fruttuoso station rather than building the day around an assumed frequency.

The boat is the simplest onward option when it operates. Services are seasonal and can change with sea conditions, so verify the operator’s timetable and the last return before leaving Genoa. A cancelled sailing is not a minor inconvenience: there is no road pickup at the abbey.

Visiting the abbey

The San Fruttuoso Abbey entry ticket costs €15 and has 4.1 stars from 41 reviews. It covers the monastery and its grounds, not transport to the cove. Keep the boat fare, timetable and admission as three separate checks.

The site is compact, and the cove can become busy when several boats arrive. Allow enough time to see the abbey without watching the clock continuously, but do not risk the final sailing for one more swim or drink.

Hiking is not a casual shortcut

Walking to or from San Fruttuoso turns the outing into a hike. Route choice, elevation and surface matter, and weather or maintenance can close paths. Consult current park information, carry suitable water and footwear, and do not use a map’s distance alone to judge difficulty. If anyone in the group is unsure, take the boat both ways.

Our recommendation

On a first visit, spend the morning in Camogli and take a return boat to San Fruttuoso only after confirming the day’s service. Book the abbey ticket if the interior matters; the cove itself does not require it. Keep a Camogli-only fallback for rough weather. A rental car adds little because it cannot reach San Fruttuoso and the train already serves Camogli directly.
